According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), vendors shipped a total of 281.5 million smartphones worldwide, up by 28.6% from the 218.8 million units in 1Q13. This result beat IDC’forecast by 5.3%.

In the worldwide mobile phone market, if we compare 1Q14 and 4Q13, vendors shipped less by -9.0% from the 492.8 million units, but this is related to the Christmas period, when sales reach the peak.

Samsung has 30.2% of the smartphone market, the second place is occupied by Apple with 15.5%. Huawei is in the third place with 4.9%, Lenovo is close with 4.6%, and LG with 4.4%.

IDC expects total smartphone shipment volumes to reach 1.2 billion units in 2014, a yearly increase of 19.3% from the 1.0 billion units shipped in 2013.

Naturally, the demand for Android apps is increasing as well due to the fact that it is the most common platform among smartphone users. The tendency is expected to continue to the future due to the flexibility Android offers over iOS.
